Shelley sits high above the Dearne and Fenay valleys, a gritstone village of weavers' cottages, stone-built houses and old farmsteads on the lanes out toward Shepley and Emley. Behind the hard Pennine stone there is plenty of original timber joinery — sash and casement windows, panelled doors and turned staircase parts — worth keeping in good order.
